Vicenza: Our "home" city in Italy

These are some pictures of Vicenza. It is between Venice and Verona, and dates back thousands of years. It was home to Antonio Palladio, a famous architect, who first used the circle and square in conjunction (a dome on top of a rectaungular foundation) and designed the first indoor theatre, still standing in Vicenza. We thought we would explore a bit more last weekend, and here are some things we found.

This is a view of Vicenza from a church called "Monte Berico". A beautiful view of the city.

This is Monte Berico church. It was dusk when the picture was taken.

This is the Rotonda, designed by A. Palladio and served as inspiration for Thomas Jefferson's home in Virginia, "Monticello". That is also the name of a small town near here.

This is a very old bridge in the old city. It does allow foot traffic, but no cars.

This is the main square in the old city, showcasing a building designed by Palladio. It is incredibly large - not sure what it is used for now. During Christmas, lights are strung from the tower on the left side of the picture across the square.

Venice

This is a view from the train station looking out at the first canal.
Here we are on the first bridge we came to in Venice. It looked like a good photo-op. Especially with such a beautiful girl!
This is Piazza San Marco. It is very large, and home to many thousands of pigeons. The basilica supposedly has some of the bones of St. Mark the apostle.
This is the Sighing Bridge, named because through this bridge prisoners would be brought to serve their time in difficult circumstances hundreds of years ago, and as they were lead over the bridge their sighs could be heard.

So, Venice was beautiful. From the train ride through Vicenza and Padova, across the causeway to Venice proper, and then walking in the maze of streets, crossing canals, and with barely enough room to maneuvre with the crowds and the shops - but is was wonderful. We had lunch at a small cafe overlooking the Adriatic, and it was beautiful. A wonderful day - and wonderful memories.

New York

Dave and I went to New York last weekend with his parents. We had a lot of fun shopping for cheap knockoffs in China Town, riding the subways, and seeing the Lion King (it was really good!) We had a lot of fun with Dave's parents out here. We sure love visitors!

Tim & Cathy in Italy - Week 2

This is part of the wall of the old city.
This is our hotel, with Cathy in front! Hotel da Porto.
This is a church in the old part of Vicenza.

We have completed our first week in Vicenza. It is a wonderful city (around 100,000) about an hour west of Venice and 30 minutes east of Verona. We are in a hotel/apartment on the west edge of the town, about a 40 minute walk to the old city. Cathy walks to the grocery store every day to try something new...but we will not buy the squid or octopus! She is haveing good succes with the language and dealing with the money. We are keeping pretty busy with learning our way around, Cathy with learning Vicenza and the language, and Tim with driving to Alonte and working with the management at CMS on an acquisition. We will have more pictures next week.
