I have the opportunity to be in India right now...end of December 2007. It is interesting, beautiful, and so very different. This is the Taj Mahal. It was built by a king in India in memory of his wife. It is in a very large complex of gardens and buildings, of which this is one. This particular building is made entirely of white marble and precious stones.
There are monkeys running free not only at historical sites, but in the cities. This one was lounging near the tomb of Akbar, the father of the king who built the Taj.
Just to prove I was there: me in front of the Taj.
This is to give an idea of the size and scale of the Taj. It is over 90 meters tall inside at the dome - about 300 feet.
They also have camels all over. They are on the streets pulling wagons; the person I am visiting here (Anand) says that many companies with whom he works have their cardboard boxes delivered by camels.
It is interesting to see the monkeys all over. Anand told us that when he was young, the monkeys around their home would sometimes take the clothes which were drying outside. Or their favorite thing to do was to take all the buttons off the shirts. They would leave the shirts - but keep the buttons!
